Every Last Night

Love you

A simple phrase

Uttered in earnest

Breath catching

Chest plummeting

Can I walk on my own heart?

Love you

Because I’m just not sure

If tomorrow is the day

I learn last night was the last night.

Love you

You’ve seen more of my tears

Heard more of my heartache

Soothed more of my pains

Than any other

Love you

Without you

There is nothing

No ground beneath my unpainted toes

No sky above my unruly curls

No future in sight for the child you raised from dust

Love you

The night at the end of this tunnel

Is necessary

Expected

But never wanted

And never now

Love you

Science and luck can

Buy more sunrises

Purchase more moons

Pay for more birthdays

Love you

But how comforting is that

When we can’t know

When there are insufficient funds?

Love you

So I’ll make sure

For now

That I treat every day like it’s normal

To comfort you

And treat every night like it’s the last

To save myself
