The sun has set by the time I arrive at headquarters in the heart of downtown. As usual, the skyscrapers bunched together make errant winds merge into mini-hurricanes that spread debris and terrorize new hairdos all throughout the day. I ascend the stone front stairs and enter through the automatic doors, releasing the grip on my lapels as I enter the warmth of the foyer. My stomach is feeling better, I’m elated at my new position and eager to get into the confidential files I now have access to. I can’t guarantee that I’ll do any better than the chief, but at least I have the opportunity really try.

Volunteer Key, a massive woman who is mostly stomach, is seated at the reception desk when I enter. Reception is normally automated after six. Since it’s half past nine, I can’t understand why she’s still here. As I get closer, I notice her face is almost as red as her thinning hair. Her chin is trembling. She’s holding back laughter. I look around, but we’re the only ones in the lobby.

To the left, restrooms. To the right are our offices. Even after several seconds, she offers no explanation for her mirthful condition, so I decide to ignore it. But as I’m walking past, she calls out to me and waves me over.
